Educational Plays for Children

Tongue Twister Diction Exercises

One of the benefits of children performing educational plays is they work on speaking clearly. It is no fun for an audience of friends and family if they cannot understand what the actors are saying. So, children have extra motivation to work on strengthening and stretching muscles associated with speaking.

Diction exercises primarily involve the lips, tongue, soft palate (soft flesh in the back of roof of the mouth near the throat), jaw, and teeth to articulate. Good articulation results in saying distinct syllables and words. Diction exercises work because they train muscle memory to fix speaking habits, which are garbled or incorrect. The most common diction exercises are tongue twisters.

Tongue twisters are fun and effective. Many are nonsense phrases and sentences that are created for saying sounds correctly. But, some focus on a single letter sound like the y in yellow. Many small children have trouble pronouncing the word yellow and it comes out ‘lellow’. Tongue twisters can also focus on a combination of letter sounds such as ‘thr’. Practicing tongue twisters makes speaking clear.

To begin practicing tongue twisters, read them slowly at first. Make sure to say the beginning and ending sounds very clearly and well-defined. Repeat the tongue twister by saying them faster and faster each time. If the tongue twister gets mangled, laugh, start over, and say it again.
