Educational Plays are an excellent way to get children reading and understanding inferences as well as literary terms such as scene, plot and character.
Term Definition
Ability Level Referring to instructional material that is appropriate for that particular child’s understanding.
Alphabet Letters of a language arranged in the order fixed by custom.
(The)Alphabetic Principle The ability to recognize and name letters and understand that each letter makes a sound. The alphabetic principle is the idea that alphabetical characters can be coded into words.
Consonant A speech sound that's not a vowel, a letter of the alphabet that represents a speech sound produced by a partial or complete obstruction of the air stream by a constriction of the speech organs.
Digraphs Two successive letters that represent a single sound.  Consonant digraphs  (ch in school) and vowel digraphs (ie in piece) are the two types of digraphs. 
Diphthongs
A vowel in which there is a noticeable sound change within the same syllable like cow. 
Fluency The ability to read a text accurately and quickly. Fluent readers recognize words automatically. They group words quickly to help them gain meaning from what they read. Because fluent readers do not have to concentrate on decoding the words, they can focus their attention on what the text means. Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.
Gliding Process of moving from one vowel sound to another.  Diphthongs are also called gliding vowels.
Language Human system of communications uses arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols.
Letter An alphabetic symbol such as A or a.
Linguistics The study of language.
Phoneme The smallest sound unit in a language that is capable of conveying a distinct meaning, such as the b in boy.  The f sound of the letters ph in the word phoneme is a phoneme.
Phonemic Awareness The understanding that words are made up of sounds which can be assembled in different ways to make different words. Once a child has phonemic awareness, they are aware that sounds are like building blocks that can be used to build different words.
Phonics A method for teaching reading and writing by developing learners’ phonemic —the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate English phonemes (small sounds)—in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns that represent them.  The goal of phonics is to enable readers to decode new written words by sounding them out blending the sound-spelling patterns.
Phonological Awareness Phonological awareness is ability to distinguish distinct sounds. Dog can be broken down to separate sounds d-o-g.
Print Concepts Awareness that print conveys a message. Print conventions consist of directionality (left to right, top to bottom), distinctions between upper and lower case, punctuation, and books have common characteristics such as author, title, front/back. Return to Home Page
Site Words The most frequently used words in the English language. 50% of all reading text is made up of 100 site words. They cannot easily be illustrated or be sounded out. A few examples include a, in, is, the, always, around, that, keep, hot, and grow.
Syllable One or more letters representing a unit of spoken language consisting of a single uninterrupted sound.  A syllable is made up of either a single vowel sound (as in the pronunciation of oh) or a combination of vowel and consonant (s) (as in no and not).
Vowel A letter of the alphabet (a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y) that represents a speech sound created by the relatively free passage of breath through the larynx and oral cavity.
